The Plumage League

... was founded in 1889 in Didsbury, Manchester, as a protest group campaigning against the use of the skins and feathers of the great crested grebe and the kittiwake in fur clothing. In 1891 it merged with the Fur, Fin and Feather Folk (founded around the same time in Croydon) to form the Society for the Protection of Birds. The Society added 'Royal' to its name after gaining its royal charter in 1904.
